Rublev Orange Ochre is a single pigment, natural earth colour made from iron oxide hydroxide (goethite, α-FeOOH) sourced from historic ochre deposits in the Luberon region of France. This pigment comes from the renowned quarries of Gargas and Rustrel, part of the ochre country nestled in the Luberon Massif. The result is a warm, earthy orange ochre with a distinctly mineral feel and a natural balance of clay-like warmth and stony undertone.
Because this ochre is based on iron oxide hydroxide (rather than anhydrous iron oxide), it carries the characteristic depth and softness of hydrated earth pigments. In use, Orange Ochre is semi-opaque with low tinting strength, making it ideal for naturalistic colour mixing, subtle temperature shifts, underpainting, and building warm passages without overpowering other colours. It produces gentle, sunbaked mixes for landscapes, skin tones, architecture, and terracotta notes. With titanium white it creates warm peach and sandstone tints that stay grounded and believable.
