Rublev Venetian Red is a classic Italian red earth made from natural red iron oxide (hematite, Fe2O3) sourced from quarries in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Hematite is the principal colouring agent in Venetian red, naturally associated with small proportions of clay, chalk, and silica that contribute to its earthy undertones and traditional character.
Venetian Red is semi-transparent with medium tinting strength, making it a versatile red ochre for both direct painting and layered techniques. It excels for warm underpainting, terracotta and brick mixes, portrait warmth, and natural reds that stay grounded rather than synthetic. It also works beautifully for neutralising bright colours and creating warm greys and mauves without muddying. Mixed with titanium white it produces soft rose, salmon, and clay pink tints that are especially useful for skin tones and sunlit architecture.
