Rublev Sartorius Red is a semi-transparent Italian red earth made from natural red iron oxide (hematite, Fe2O3), the principal colouring agent in red ochres. This is an anhydrous red earth (it contains no bound water), which gives it the characteristic depth and warmth of true iron oxide reds rather than the softer character of hydrated yellow ochres. The pigment is naturally associated with small proportions of clay, chalk, and silica, which contribute to its earthy undertones and traditional feel.

Sartorius Red is semi-transparent with low tinting strength, making it ideal for glazing, underpainting, and subtle temperature shifts where you want a warm red earth that builds slowly and stays natural. It is excellent for brick and terracotta notes, portrait warmth, landscape earth reds, and for reducing chroma in brighter colours without deadening mixtures. With titanium white it produces soft salmon, clay pink, and warm rose tints that are especially useful for skin tones and sunlit architecture.
