Rublev Italian Dark Ochre is a classic, natural yellow earth made from hydrated iron oxide (goethite, α-FeOOH), the principal colouring agent in ochres. Like true ochres, it contains water in its mineral structure (iron oxide hydroxide), which gives it the characteristic earthy warmth and natural, grounded transparency. It is associated with varying proportions of clay, chalk, and silica, which contribute to its subtle depth and traditional feel in paint.
Italian Dark Ochre is semi-transparent with medium tinting strength and a dependable, permanent character. It is ideal for underpainting, portrait work, landscape passages, and mixing warm neutrals that do not look synthetic. It builds beautifully in layers, producing sunbaked golds, aged stone tones, and natural skin undertones. Mixed with titanium white it creates soft straw and warm beige tints that stay earthy rather than chalky.
