Rublev Ultramarine Blue (Red Shade) is a transparent, high strength ultramarine milled in walnut oil with no additives. Walnut oil wets ultramarine differently than linseed oil, giving this colour a noticeably more buttery feel than the Ultramarine Blue (Green Shade) version while still retaining the slightly long, elastic brushmarks typical of ultramarine due to its hydrophilic nature.
The red shade of PB 29 leans warmer than green shade ultramarine, making it ideal for rich violets, atmospheric shadow blues, and classic ultramarine mixtures where you want depth without a green cast. It excels in glazing, layered passages, and luminous transparent darks. With titanium white it produces clean, high-chroma tints and soft lavender blues that stay bright and stable.
