Rublev Italian Yellow Earth is a semi-transparent, deep golden yellow earth with a natural warmth that makes beautiful beige half-tints. This yellow earth is quarried in Northern Italy and is based on the natural mineral goethite (α-FeOOH), an iron oxide hydroxide that occurs with small proportions of clay, chalk, and quartz. Unlike red ochres (iron oxide), yellow earth pigments contain water in their mineral structure, which contributes to their classic, mellow ochre character.
Ground in linseed oil with no additives, Italian Yellow Earth is a dependable studio colour for underpainting, landscapes, and portrait work. It is especially useful when you want a natural golden yellow that can warm mixtures without becoming harsh or synthetic. Use it to soften greens, create sunlit earth notes, or build luminous warm grounds. Mixed with titanium white it produces creamy straw, sandstone, and warm beige tints that stay earthy rather than chalky.
